Wall to Rock

Outcrop climbing involves visiting moorland crags and attempting single pitch routes of up to about 50’ in height. This one day course is designed for those who have perhaps started their climbing career in an indoor wall such as The Newcastle Climbing Centre and want to progress to the outdoors. We will visit two of Northumberland’s classic sandstone outcrops and break the day up by having lunch in a pub. Participants will have the opportunity to climb, on a top rope, a number of routes of a grade suitable to their ability.

After this course, most students feel happy to undertake visits, by themselves, to local outcrops, in the knowledge that they will be employing safe techniques.

Although we encourage students to provide their own harnesses and belay plates, these items can be provided. All other equipment is supplied.

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at climbers who are over 18 and wish to experience and learn the skills required to climb outdoors. The minimum requirement is that clients can safely operate a belay plate and can confidently climb at French technical grade 4.

Instructor / Client ratio

The ratio on these courses is 1:6, and all staff have a minimum of the SPA (Single pitch supervisor's award). The senior member of staff will be a Mountain Instructor. Minimum of 4 people.

Dates and cost

The cost is £50 (which includes instruction and use of equipment. NB. transport is not included.)

Classic Rock Climbs

Do you want to climb some the classic multi-pitch rock routes in the Lake District? We offer you the opportunity to climb some of the UKs most famous routes under the careful guidance of a highly qualified mountaineering instructor. You will climb in ratios of two clients to one instructor, and all three will climb together on routes. This low instructor : student ratio ensures that you have a safe and full learning experience. These, 2 day, courses are based in Langdale in the Lake District over a number of weekends throughout the summer.

You will meet the instructional team on the Friday night, to discuss plans for the weekend and decisions will be made in the light of individuals experience and aspirations and, of course, the weather forecast! If you have climbed on indoor walls or local outcrops and wish to take the sport to the next level then this is the course for you. Participants need not worry about the standard of climbing ability as instructors will select routes of an appropriate difficulty and it is normal to start these courses with a route no more difficult and French 4 / English VD. The course will cover many technical issues such as:-

• The leader rack and how to place (and retrieve!) safe running belays
• Main belay construction and rope management of stances
• Guidebook use and route finding
• Abseil retreat

For those clients keen to progress to leading multi-pitch routes there may be a possibility that by the second day of the course they will be coached to make their first multi-pitch lead.
