NCC'S OWN IAN MCFARLANE'S EPIC CYCLING ADVENTURE!!

May 11, 2010

Ian McFarlane currently works here at NCC as a climbing instructor and will shortly be leaving us to embark upon an epic journey cycling across an entire continent. Starting off in Amsterdam Ian will spend three months following both the river Rhine and the river Danube, through 10 different countries, before eventually arriving at Istanbul in Turkey. The 4000km journey will witness Ian travel through a variety of terrains ranging from the windswept plains of Holland to the sun-kissed mountain passes of the Alps and Carpathian Mountains. The trip will be entirely self sufficient meaning that the young adventurer will have to carry all of his own equipment on his bike for the entire duration of the trip. As you can see from the pictures, it’s not exactly a light load!
In – between teaching eager and enthusiastic youngsters at the NCC kids club and, looking after look our customers, Ian managed to find a minute to tell us why he had decided to set himself such a challenge. Here is what he had to say…

“From a very young age I found myself fascinated with adventure travel and tales of bold and audacious exploration. I was always amazed by the spirit of adventure and the sheer passion that was often displayed by the individuals who embarked upon such journeys. Above all however, it was in reading up on the adventures of others that I was inspired to set sail and embark upon my own adventure.  From my experiences so far I find that travelling by bike allows you to really feel connected with a place whilst giving the opportunity to see a country in a different light when compared to just stepping off a plane. It’s also great fun and, most importantly, really cheap!”

Ian will be setting off on Tuesday May 11th. NCC wishes Ian good luck & a safe journey. If you are interested in following Ians travels then why not check out his blog to see how he is getting on…
